The first step on Mitt Romney’s journey to the White House in 2012 will be taken on Sept. 3, 2008
when he strides towards the speaker’s podium at the Republican National Convention. I wish the Republican ticket well this November and I think that, since Gov. Romney wasn’t picked by John McCain, the selection of Sarah Palin keeps the GOP as the Pro Life party and that she was one of the best picks that McCain could have made under the circumstances.
If McCain picks Gov. Romney for a high profile post, such as Treasury Secretary, Mitt will be well positioned for another run. If McCain is too insecure to risk a Romney appointment, then Romney should take on the role of party-builder, as he already has. McCain is the leader of the GOP right now, but his time will pass. We should not be despondent, but rather we should be energized by what we were able to accomplish in this campaign. We have all noted the phrases that were authored by Romney, that found their way into the McCain campaign. The pro business and tax cut positions that were adopted by McCain. Even the pick of Sarah Palin, a pro life candidate, is a bow to the power of the the much maligned religious right that, to hear the MSM tell it, had lost it’s influence in the Republican Party.
The pro abortion candidate trial balloons were floated up and promptly shot down. The liberal Democrat VP pick trial balloon was floated up and promptly shot down.
So, after the input of 100’s of thousands of activists all over the country, we were able to accomplish this:
1. The Republican Party remains the Pro Life Party
2. We Will Drill Here and Drill Now
3. We Will Send a New Breed of Politician to Washington to End the Corruption
4. We Will Secure the Borders and Enforce the Rule of Law
5. We Will Start the Process of Cutting Federal Spending and Move to Balance the Budget
6. We Will Win the War in Iraq and start to Withdraw our Troops
These are Mitt Romney’s positions and because he pressed John McCain so hard in the primaries, McCain was forced to adopt several of these positions and his pick of Sarah Palin, in my view, also reflects his grudging respect for Gov. Romney and for the social, fiscal and national defense conservatives who were the driving force behind his campaign.

Country First: Prosperity
“America’s best days are still to come.”
–Sen. John McCain
The American story is one of perseverance. Even in the face of tough times, the ingenuity and spirit of the American people has ushered in a new era of prosperity. Wednesday’s program will focus on John McCain’s plans to get our economy back on track and continue our long tradition of meeting the challenges we face and using our prosperity to help others. The day will conclude with an address by the vice presidential nominee.
Speakers will include:
* Mrs. Cindy McCain
* Republican Party’s Vice Presidential Nominee
* Gov. Bobby Jindal (La.)
* Former Gov. Mitt Romney (Mass.)
* U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman (Minn.)
* U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas)*
* U.S. Rep. Mike Pence (Ind.)*
“Our convention will showcase a cross-section of leaders who will highlight John McCain’s long commitment to putting our country first — before self-interest or politics,” said McCain 2008 Communications Director Jill Hazelbaker. “The speakers will address John McCain’s unmatched record of service and sacrifice for America, and his vision for moving our nation forward to keep us safe and get our economy back on track.
The roster of speakers announced today includes John McCain, Mrs. Cindy McCain, 10 current and former Republican governors, five current and former U.S. Senators and two wellrespected businesswomen. Their remarks will echo the themes that have been selected for each of the convention’s four days: service, reform, prosperity and peace.
“We are excited to announce this slate of speakers, each of whom shares John McCain’s love of country and commitment to serving a cause greater than one’s own self-interest. Their remarks will be a testament to Senator McCain’s unparalleled record of service and sacrifice for America and his readiness to lead as commander in chief and move America forward,” said Maria Cino, president and CEO of the 2008 Republican National Convention.
